12th Sperger Competition in 2026, is delighted and honoured to have received commitments from the members of this

This A major concerto was the first work by Johann Matthias Sperger to be performed and published in modern times. The distinguished solo double bassist Franz Ortner, who played with the Nuremberg Opera and later with the Munich Opera, performed it on June 2, 1940, together with the Nuremberg Opera Orchestra. Even then, a musicologist recognized and described the musical affinity with Mozart.

Die bisherigen elf Internationalen Johann-Matthias-Sperger Wettbewerbe für Kontrabass seit dem Jahr 2000, erfuhren neben der sehr großen internationalen Beteiligung ein außergewöhnlich hohes künstlerisches Niveau. Alle Preisträger erhielten Spitzenpositionen in führenden Orchestern Europas oder Professuren an Musikhochschulen. Es ist mir daher eine große Freude, diesen Wettbewerb ideell zu begleiten und zu unterstützen – dient er doch zwei zentralen Aspekten: einmal das enorme kompositorische Oeuvre des Namensgebers zu zeigen und dem kontrabassistischen Nachwuchs die Chance des internationalen Vergleiches zu ermöglichen. Dem Sperger-Kontrabass-Wettbewerbes 2026 wünsche ich erneut eine große internationale Beteiligung und den Teilnehmern viel Erfolg sowie eine ereignisreiche Woche mit großartigen musikalischen Begegnungen!

The eleven International Johann Matthias Sperger Competitions for Double Bass since 2000 have enjoyed, in addition to a very large international participation, an exceptionally high artistic standard. All prizewinners have received top positions in leading European orchestras or professorships at music academies.
It is therefore a great pleasure for me to accompany and support this competition – after all, it serves two central aspects: first, to showcase the enormous compositional oeuvre of its namesake and, second, to give young double bass players the opportunity to compete internationally.
I wish the 2026 Sperger Double Bass Competition once again a large international participation and the participants much success, as well as an eventful week with great musical encounters!

Es sind genau 20 Jahre vergangen, als ich im Jahre 2006 den vierten Sperger-Wettbewerb als Schirmherrin begleitete, ebenso die Wettbewerbe 2008 und 2010.
Es ist mir immer eine große Freude, von den enormen künstlerischen Leistungen der jungen Kontrabassisten zu hören, die inzwischen – angeregt durch diese Wettbewerbe – ebenfalls wie die hohen Streicher, auch solistische Aufgaben übernehmen.
So wünsche ich allen Teilnehmern, dass auch der zwölfte Wettbewerb eine Inspirationsquelle für ihre Weiterentwicklung sein wird.
Mögen sich auch weiterhin viele spannende Komponisten für dieses beeindruckende Instrument interessieren.

Exactly 20 years have passed since I accompanied the fourth Sperger Competition as patron in 2006, as well as the competitions in 2008 and 2010.
It is always a great pleasure for me to hear about the enormous artistic achievements of the young double bassists who, inspired by these competitions, are now also taking on solo roles, just like the string players.
I therefore wish all participants that the twelfth competition will also be a source of inspiration for their further development.
May many exciting composers continue to take an interest in this impressive instrument.
